Day 1

Batatotalena Cave

Located 85 km from Colombo in Sudagala, about 5 km from Kuruwita, Batatotalena Cave has been a human dwelling for over 25,000 years. It was inhabited during various historical periods, according to archaeological evidence, which uncovered skeletal remains, ancient cave drawings, a Buddhist shrine room, and a Devalaya. Buddhist texts also mention Batatotalena as a sacred site where Lord Buddha rested on his return from Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak).

Day 2

Belilena Cave

Nestled in the scenic Kitulgala area, Belilena Cave ranks among Sri Lanka’s largest caves. Archaeological finds indicate it was inhabited by prehistoric humans as far back as 32,000 years ago. Fossils, including remains believed to belong to the Balangoda man, have been uncovered here. The cave is also home to colorful butterflies and a large colony of bats.

Day 3

Batadombalena Cave

A must-see destination! Batadombalena Cave, located near Kuruwita, roughly 90 kilometers from Colombo, is notable for being the home of the prehistoric 'Balangoda Man.' Excavations have revealed skeletal remains, as well as freshwater shells and stone tools dating back over 28,000 years, which were likely used for hunting. The cave is set behind a gently flowing waterfall, offering a tranquil atmosphere.

Day 4

Waulpane Cave

Waulpane Cave, also referred to as the ‘Bat Cave,’ houses thousands of bats. Situated in the eastern foothills of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, it is renowned for its stunning stalactites and stalagmites, which are around 500 million years old. The cave's walls contain prehistoric fossils, and it also features a picturesque internal waterfall, home to water monitors, amphibians, and various fish species.

Day 5

Mahalenama Cave

Between Kumana and Lahugala-Kithulana lies Mahalenama Cave, which has a unique history. It is said to have been home to the mysterious "Nittaewo," a lost race in Sri Lanka. Controversy surrounds the identity of this group, with most theories describing them as ape-like beings, small in stature, covered in hair, and possessing strong claws.

Pannila Calcarious Cave

Pannila Calcarious Cave is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including fish, birds, butterflies, reptiles, and bats, creating a zoo-like atmosphere. The cave features two main chambers near a scenic waterfall. Its history stretches back approximately 500 million years, and smaller caves within contain ancient stalagmites and stalactites.

Day 7

Andirilena Cave

Situated about 4 km from Udugama in the Galle District, Andirilena Cave may have a small entrance, but its interior is vast. Two tunnels branch off from the main cave, leading to several smaller chambers before reconnecting after 500 meters, making for a thrilling adventure.

Day 8

Ravana Ella Cave

Located around 2 km from the well-known town of Ella, Ravana Ella Cave may be smaller than other caves in Sri Lanka, but it carries great historical significance. Legend has it that King Ravana used this cave to hide Princess Sita. It is also believed to be linked to other ancient cities through a network of tunnels, used by Ravana for transportation and as secret pathways through the hills.

Day 9

Bogoda Cave

Bogoda Cave is said to have served as a hideout for King Walagamba during invasions by South Indian forces. This cave was part of an intricate system of tunnels connecting to other sites, such as Narangala Mountain, Dowa Rock Temple in Bandarawela, and Ravana Ella Cave. Over time, dense vegetation has covered these tunnels.

Day 10

Pahiyangala Cave

Located around 40 km from Colombo in Yatagampitiya, Pahiyangala Cave, also called Fa-Hien Lena, is the largest cave in Sri Lanka and one of the largest natural rock formations in Asia. Prehistoric remains indicate that the cave was inhabited around 37,000 years ago, making it one of the oldest known human settlements in the region.

Day 11

Sthripura Cave

Situated in the village of Kiriwanagama, 16 km from Welimada, Sthripura Cave is connected to the ancient Ramayana epic. It is believed that King Ravana used this cave to hide Princess Sita after abducting her from Prince Rama. The cave is thought to have served as a shelter during Ravana’s rule.
